wow, what a month. although it was filled with lots of sickness - two and a half colds and a bout of pink eye mixed in for good measure - little miss thee still learned quite a bit. in fact her development and the list of new things she can do on a daily basis is increasing so fast i am struggling to keep up with it all.
thea started signing in earnest - more, milk, water, finished/all done - and it's so amazing to watch her connect words and signs and attach meaning to them. her 'more' becomes quite large and aggressive if she doesn't get what she wants right away. she also has a bunch of words under her belt - hi! hi! hi!, hot [accompanied by a fanning her mouth gesture], up, papa, pump [for pumpkin], eggs, loud [which sounds curiously similar to 'hi' but she covers her ears with her hands so we know what she means], and my favorite, oh wow! she also started making animals sounds this month - dog, cow, pig - though the 'meow' of a cat is her favorite, much to her father's dismay.
she's constantly babbling, stringing together a bunch of unintelligible words with the correct intonations of proper english. i'm so excited for her to talk but i am loving this period just before when she looks at us with her big eyes and asks questions full of jibberish fully expecting us to understand and answer.
she continues to be a monkey in more ways than one. not only does she use her feet to do a lot of things: turn the pages of her books, spin one of her favorite toys, start the music on another, kick her soccer ball, but she also climbs on everything. she figured out how to get up into our rocking chair this week and, fortunately, she also learned how to get off of things backwards this month so we worry [a little] less about her flailing head first off the furniture. while i wouldn't say she's walking yet, she does take 6-8 drunken sailor/zombie steps at a time before deciding that she can get where she wants much faster by crawling.
she's fascinated with lights and understands the concept of on and off, looking up at the light as she flips the switch up and down. we can't pass a switch without her reaching out and trying to play with it. we've spent hours at various switches in our house this month as i watch her determined little face figure out these very basic concepts i can't help but think that it won't be long before she'll want to know every detail about electricity. how does it work? and why does it work? and who invented it? and when? the progression is inevitable and coming so much more quickly than i imagined. it's kind of blowing my mind, i have to admit. the tiny bundle we brought home eleven months ago is no longer a baby but a thriving, fun, delightful little person. i feel so lucky to get to wake up each day and share life with her!
ps - not only has our computer stopped working, but it looks like my camera has taken its final breath so i apologize for the crappy photos. these things tend to happen in threes and i'm hoping the nearly $2000 i spent replacing the a/c compressor and fan belt in my car this week means that nothing else is going to break around here for awhile.
